Tomorrows UniCredit residency and production award
Seconda edizione • 2024/25
Rachele Maistrello, presentata da Artopia, è la vincitrice della seconda edizione del Tomorrows UniCredit residency and production award con il progetto “FEN LIN. Black Diamond“, scelto all’unanimità dalla prestigiosa giuria.

Il progetto di Rachele Maistrello ha convinto i giurati per la sua capacità di affrontare con sensibilità e profondità questioni scientifiche urgenti e per l’approccio metodologico al tema dell’epigenetica ambientale e transgenerazionale, in cui la pratica artistica si fa strumento di esplorazione e dialogo con la ricerca scientifica. Ha espresso così appieno l’intento del premio di residenza e produzione, del valore di 20.000,00 euro, che stimola la ricerca transdisciplinare per trovare soluzioni creative e non convenzionali rispetto alle attuali problematiche ambientali, economiche e sociali, dimostrando come l’arte possa generare immagini, riflessioni e visioni per un futuro possibile, prospero e inclusivo, capace di stimolare un cambio di rotta nel nostro rapporto con il pianeta e i suoi ecosistemi.
IL PROGETTO
Black Diamond sarà il terzo capitolo di The Diamond saga, corpus di lavori che dal 2019 investiga il rapporto tra uomo e natura tramite un uso speculativo del fotografico e dell’indagine scientifica, presentato negli anni presso istituzioni pubbliche e private tra Cina, Giappone, Italia, Svizzera, Germania e Francia. Attraverso capitoli narrativi, il lavoro di Maistrello tematizza urgenze peculiari nel contemporaneo quali la sostenibilità e l’ecologia, mettendo in scena scoperte in campo neuroscientifico e biologico. Ogni capitolo è legato a un colore specifico – il primo Green Diamond, il secondo Blue Diamond – e tratta un tema epistemologico: in questa terza parte si indagheranno le connessioni tra patrimonio genetico, cognitivo e geologico. Custodi delle radici materiali, la composizione del terreno e della terra saranno la chiave attraverso la quale l’artista, mediata dall’alter-ego Fen Lin, racconterà il rapporto dell’essere umano con la genealogia (cognitiva e genetica), partendo dall’assunto che tanto la materia delle rocce quanto la materia genetica di cui siamo fatti recano tracce del passato, non solo da un punto di vista fisico, bensì neurologico. Questo apre nuovi discorsi su teorie di scienze cognitive e scienze della mente, che Maistrello andrà a indagare durante la residenza artistica presso il Narrative and Cognition Lab dell’Università di Durham.
La serie di cinque opere fotografiche e un video che ne deriverà coniugherà, quindi, studi di epigenetica, neuroscienza e biologia. Utilizzando la tecnica della cromatografia, le opere renderanno visibile la ricchezza della terra, metafora del sottosuolo cognitivo e fondante dell’essere umano. I risultati della ricerca verranno, poi, divulgati in Italia e all’estero grazie a un ricco bacino di partner culturali, come Tria Publishing e House of Books di Zurigo (Svizzera) e Swit Platform a Göteborg (Svezia).
L’opera di Rachele Maistrello sarà presentata ad ArtVerona 2025 ed entrerà a far parte della prestigiosa UniCredit Art Collection.
La giuria ha, infine, assegnato due menzioni speciali alle artiste Silvia Infranco per il progetto Herbarium Resonans ed Elena Mazzi per Complex geographies, con la seguente motivazione: “La giuria vuole assegnare due menzioni speciali al lavoro di Silvia Infranco per il suo progetto che unisce l’istanza di un ascolto attivo a una ricerca sull’estinzione vegetale e a Elena Mazzi per la sua indagine cartografica sulle problematiche relazioni tra sviluppo economico e tradizione Sami”.

Rachele Maistrello, presented by Artopia, is the winner of the second edition of the Tomorrows UniCredit residency and production award with the project ‘FEN LIN. Black Diamond', unanimously chosen by the prestigious jury.
Rachele Maistrello's project convinced the jurors for its ability to address urgent scientific issues with sensitivity and depth and for its methodological approach to the theme of environmental and transgenerational epigenetics, in which artistic practice becomes a tool for exploration and dialogue with scientific research. He thus fully expressed the intent of the residence and production prize, worth 20,000.00 euros, which stimulates transdisciplinary research to find creative and unconventional solutions to current environmental, economic and social issues, demonstrating how art can generate images, reflections and visions for a possible, prosperous and inclusive future, capable of stimulating a change of course in our relationship with the planet and its ecosystems.
THE PROJECT
Black Diamond will be the third chapter of The Diamond saga, a body of work that since 2019 has investigated the relationship between man and nature through a speculative use of photography and scientific investigation, presented over the years at public and private institutions in China, Japan, Italy, Switzerland, Germany and France. Through narrative chapters, Maistrello's work thematises peculiar urgencies in the contemporary world such as sustainability and ecology, staging discoveries in the neuroscientific and biological fields. Each chapter is linked to a specific colour - the first Green Diamond, the second Blue Diamond - and deals with an epistemological theme: in this third part, the connections between genetic, cognitive and geological heritage are investigated. Keepers of material roots, the composition of the soil and earth will be the key through which the artist, mediated by her alter-ego Fen Lin, will narrate the relationship of the human being with genealogy (cognitive and genetic), starting from the assumption that both the matter of rocks and the genetic matter of which we are made bear traces of the past, not only from a physical, but also from a neurological point of view. This opens up new discourses on theories of cognitive science and the sciences of the mind, which Maistrello will investigate during his artistic residency at Durham University's Narrative and Cognition Lab.
The resulting series of five photographic works and a video will thus combine studies in epigenetics, neuroscience and biology. Using the technique of chromatography, the works will make visible the richness of the earth, a metaphor for the cognitive and foundational subsoil of the human being. The results of the research will then be disseminated in Italy and abroad thanks to a rich pool of cultural partners, such as Tria Publishing and House of Books in Zurich (Switzerland) and Swit Platform in Gothenburg (Sweden).
Rachele Maistrello's work will be presented at ArtVerona 2025 and will become part of the prestigious UniCredit Art Collection.
The jury awarded two special mentions to the artists Silvia Infranco for the project Herbarium Resonans and Elena Mazzi for Complex geographies, with the following motivation: ‘The jury would like to award two special mentions to the work of Silvia Infranco for her project that combines the instance of active listening with a research on plant extinction, and to Elena Mazzi for her cartographic investigation into the problematic relations between economic development and Sami tradition.
