A Land of Water
Il progetto 2024-2025 invita a riflettere non solo sul fascino e sull’importanza dell’acqua, ma anche su sfide e minacce che essa affronta. La crisi idrica diventa una metafora della più ampia crisi ambientale, richiamando l’attenzione sulla necessità di proteggere e preservare le risorse del nostro pianeta.
L’arte si propone come mezzo per rileggere il passato, analizzare il presente ed esplorare scenari futuri, invitandoci a considerare la nostra responsabilità nell’affrontare la crisi ambientale e nel garantire un equilibrio sostenibile per la vita sulla Terra.
L’intero progetto propone fino a ottobre 2025 due mostre e un ricco programma pubblico, sostenuti da Fondazione Cariverona, e la seconda edizione del premio Tomorrows UniCredit residency and production award

Anticipa la tematica, con un focus sulla città di Verona, Panta Rei
Attraverso le opere d’arte e azioni specifiche del programma pubblico si intende così indagare il tema delle acque urbane nel passaggio da un rapporto simbiotico a un rapporto oppositivo, osservando le trasformazioni della città scaligera in relazione al suo fiume.
Il vasto programma pubblico, sostenuto da Fondazione Cariverona, intercetta i focus di indagine di entrambe le esposizioni articolandosi in momenti di ricerca e dibattito scientifico, un convegno, una residenza d’artista, momenti formativi e laboratori per le scuole e le famiglie, oltre ad azioni di divulgazione e coinvolgimento del grande pubblico, come concerti in occasione delle inaugurazioni delle due mostre, una rassegna cinematografica ed esplorazioni del territorio.
The 2024-2025 project invites reflection not only on the fascination and importance of water, but also on the challenges and threats it faces. The water crisis becomes a metaphor for the broader environmental crisis, drawing attention to the need to protect and preserve our planet's resources.
Art is proposed as a means to reread the past, analyze the present and explore future scenarios, inviting us to consider our responsibility in addressing the environmental crisis and ensuring a sustainable balance for life on Earth.
The entire project features two exhibitions and a rich public program until October 2025, supported by Fondazione Cariverona, and the second edition of the Tomorrows UniCredit residency and production award that promotes artistic research related to urgent issues on environmental sustainability.
Pivotal action the exhibition TOMORROWS - A Land of Water at Castel San Pietro: the exhibition itinerary, focused for 2024 on the theme of water, will present video works by international artists for a wide-ranging analysis of the dynamics related to the water crisis also in a social and geopolitical sense.
Anticipating the theme, with a focus on the city of Verona, Panta Rei, a rearrangement of the spaces of Fondazione Cariverona's headquarters in Palazzo Pellegrini that celebrates the return after a long absence of Arturo Martini's Woman Swimming Underwater, to which an entire project room is dedicated.
Through the artworks and specific actions of the public program, it is thus intended to investigate the theme of urban water in its transition from a symbiotic to an oppositional relationship, observing the transformations of the Scaliger city in relation to its river.
The extensive public program, supported by Fondazione Cariverona, intercepts the focus of investigation of both exhibitions by articulating into moments of research and scientific debate, a conference, an artist residency, educational moments and workshops for schools and families, as well as actions of dissemination and involvement of the general public, such as concerts on the occasion of the openings of the two exhibitions, a film festival and explorations of the territory.

Progetto Tomorrows – Notes on the Future of the Earth

Luca Bochicchio, ricercatore e docente di Storia dell’arte contemporanea all’Università di Verona. Il suo contributo riprende una mostra personale di Rebecca Ballestra (1974-2020), tenuta nel 2010 alla Galleria Alberta Pane di Parigi, intitolata The Future is Near! The Future is Now! Con linguaggio poetico e mischiando diversi media, tecnologici e tradizionali, l’artista sviscerava i dati relativi a crisi demografiche e migrazioni, controllo delle risorse alimentari, inondazioni, pandemie e guerre globali: i temi affrontati dalle opere allestite in quella occasione ci inducono a riflettere sulla capacità degli artisti di leggere la realtà e, in alcuni casi, di prevedere scenari contemporanei e futuri.
Mauro Varotto, geografo, docente di Geografia e Geografia culturale all'Università degli Studi di Padova. Fondatore del primo Museo di Geografia in Italia, ha recentemente pubblicato con Telmo Pievani Viaggio nell'Italia dell'Antropocene. La geografia visionaria del nostro futuro (Aboca edizioni, 2021) e Il giro del mondo nell'Antropocene. Una mappa dell'umanità del futuro (Raffaello Cortina, 2022).
SITESIZE (Elvira Pujol Masip e Joan Vila Puig), collettivo dedicato alla creazione e alla ricerca sulla metropoli contemporanea. Dal 2002 sviluppano progetti artistici e ricercano forme autonome di produzione culturale e di apprendimento comunitario. Per la mostra Tomorrows - Notes on the Future of the Earth presentano: TERRApolis (2020-21), una trilogia audiovisiva sulla città di L'Hospitalet de Llobregat che si concentra sulla vita fisica, spirituale, umana e non umana di questo territorio (parte del progetto europeo A-PLACE. Linking places through networked artistic practices ed è cofinanziato dal programma Creative Europe dell'Unione Europea e da LOOP Barcelona).
Nina Backman è un'artista, performer e curatrice finlandese. Nata a Helsinki, ha studiato scenografia presso il Liverpool Institute for the Performing Arts nel Regno Unito, vive e lavora a Berlino. Fondatrice di Silence Project (con cui ha vinto nel 2023 il premio come miglior iniziativa d’arte sociale nell’ambito dell’European Enterprise Award) si propone di mettere in relazione il lavoro di artisti liberamente operanti con entità culturali e sociali, al fine di studiare, condividere e sperimentare il concetto di silenzio in relazione alle nuove realtà urbane. Nel maggio 2023, al Center for Applied Ecological Thinking dell’Università di Copenhagen, Nina ha portato le riflessioni che intende sviluppare oggii: “Come si relaziona l’arte contemporanea con un futuro sostenibile? Qual è il ruolo degli artisti e dei musei nel nostro tempo? Esponendoci a nuove idee e prospettive, l’arte ha il potere di cambiare il modo in cui pensiamo e agiamo? Può l’arte ispirarci a apportare cambiamenti positivi nella nostra vita e nella società nel suo insieme?”.

Tomorrows Project – Notes on the Future of the Earth
Speakers
Luca Bochicchio, researcher and professor of contemporary art history at the University of Verona. His contribution captures a solo exhibition of Rebecca Ballestra (1974-2020), held in 2010 at the Alberta Pane Gallery in Paris, entitled The Future is Near! The Future is Now! Using poetic language and mixing different media, technological and traditional, the artist dissected data on demographic crises and migration, control of food resources, floods, pandemics and global wars.The themes addressed by the works mounted on that occasion lead us to reflect on the ability of artists to read reality and, in some cases, to predict contemporary and future scenarios.
Mauro Varotto, geographer, professor of Geography and Cultural Geography at the University of Padua. Founder of the first Museum of Geography in Italy, he recently published with Telmo Pievani Viaggio nell'Italia dell'Antropocene. The visionary geography of our future (Aboca edizioni, 2021) and Around the World in the Anthropocene. A map of future humanity (Raffaello Cortina, 2022).

Since 2002 they have been developing artistic projects and researching autonomous forms of cultural production and community learning. For the exhibition Tomorrows - Notes on the Future of the Earth they present: TERRApolis (2020-21), an audiovisual trilogy on the city of L'Hospitalet de Llobregat that focuses on the physical, spiritual, human and non-human life of this territory (part of the European project A-PLACE. Linking places through networked artistic practices and is co-financed by the European Union's Creative Europe program and LOOP Barcelona).
Nina Backman is a Finnish artist, performer and curator. Born in Helsinki, she studied set design at the Liverpool Institute for the Performing Arts in the UK and lives and works in Berlin. Founder of Silence Project (with which she won the best social art initiative award in the European Enterprise Award in 2023) aims to connect the work of freely operating artists with cultural and social entities in order to study, share and experiment with the concept of silence in relation to new urban realities. In May 2023, at the Center for Applied Ecological Thinking at the University of Copenhagen, Nina brought the thoughts she intends to develop todayi: "How does contemporary art relate to a sustainable future? What is the role of artists and museums in our time? By exposing us to new ideas and perspectives, does art have the power to change the way we think and act? Can art inspire us to make positive changes in our lives and society as a whole?"
